DiskMax v2.1

DiskMax is a hard disk performance tool. The latest version is out: 2.1. It is fully compatible with Windows Vista. DiskMax comes with no installer/uninstaller (its a standalone!). It really doesn't matter where you run it from! All this contributes to it being just 288KB!

It's got a very Vista-like interface as you can see from the screenshot above. As each section of your system is tuned up, that portion of the tasklist lights up (in the figure only HDD and UserAccounts are lit up; Windows, DeepScan and Defrag are yet to come). You won't realise how fast your computer can be until you've run DiskMax at least once!

In order to see how many people run this software, it is necessary that DiskMax is allowed to register itself on the internet the first time its run. Kindly show your support by leaving comments!

Regular Blogging shifted to Google's Blogger

Its been almost two years since I created this blog. And its been great!

MSN Spaces evolved into Windows Live Spaces recently. While that was highly anticipated by me, it didn't quite have the effect I wanted. Simple put, WL Spaces is a resource hog (at the time of this writing). I have a perfectly good system but it chokes on WLS once in a while if I multitask too much. I can imagine what it much be like for many of my readers...

Keeping this in mind I've migrated to a faster and lighter service that will let me get my message across without all the other fancy crap. This blog will continue to be up. It will continue to be updated with important announcements, but my life will be up on Google's Blogger!

Visit me there! I'll be waiting! And not so patiently!

Windows Live Favorites

I've included the Windows Live Favorites module in my space. I've already listed a couple of good sites but I want compile a massive list of the coolest sites on the internet for everyone to use. If you have a site that you visit often, please leave its URL and mention which category (note: you can even introduce new categories) it falls into as a comment to this post. It'll be checked and entered into the favorites list within 72 hours.

Please contribute wholeheartedly to this endeavor.

KJohn DesktopSearch v1.03

Google Desktop Search takes hours to index your hard disk and then searching is not really all that great either with all sorts of irrelevant results (like showing all the contents of a folder as individual results just because the folder name matched the search query!!; Google takes great pride in the number of results returned. Hmmm.......)

Now imagine being able to index your computer in as little as 15 seconds and being able to search for files and folders in as little as 0.05 seconds. Impossible? Not with KJohn DesktopSearch! Look at the table below for a full comparison:

 Feature  Google DS  KJohn DS
Size ~1MB ~0.3MB
Indexing time Hours Less than a minute
Search time ~0.5ms ~0.05ms
Results 10 per page All at once!
DeepScan No Yes
Performance Drop More Much lesser¹
Office 2007 Support No² Yes
Interface Generic Vista-grade

¹except when high priority indexing is requested for
²at the time of this writing

KJohn DesktopSearch supports a whopping 36 filetypes including the Office 2007 ones! A partial list: DOC,RTF,PPT,PUB, XLS, DOCX,PPTX,XLSX,PUBX, WMA,WMV,MP3,MPEG,MPG,EXE,COM,ZIP,RAR,CAB, TXT,HTML,PDF, AVI,MOV,MID,WAV, BMP,JPEG,JPG,PNG,GIF...

The entire program is contained within a self-contained executable named 'KJSearch.exe'. All you need to install or run the program is this executable. Each user on the system will need to install the software for themselves if they wish to use it. On running the executable for the first time, it automatically installs itself after asking for permission. Then indexing is run for the first time (this is likely to take much less than a minute). You can start searching your computer as soon as this is over!!!

New Features in v1.03:
1. Better documentation, including documentation relating to the Internet Explorer active content alert override.
2. Improved installer/uninstaller subroutines.
3. Online registration
4. Theme support across application (extended to About page)
5. Indexing subroutine optimisation
6. Updated results pages

DiskMax v1

DiskMax is a hard disk performance tool I created. It started with a little project called DiskClean that I created to automate all my disk cleaning activities. I used it for well over a year before I thought, 'Hey, Vista's coming out soon, my XP installation is all pepped up with Vista features but here I have my trusty old DiskClean with a Win9x-esque interface' (saying it was ugly is being very kind).

So I started work on DiskMax. Like LiveConnect, DiskMax comes with no installer/uninstaller (its a standalone!). It really doesn't matter where you run it from! All this contributes to it being just 212KB!

LiveConnect v6

This is the final version of LiveConnect v6. In light of the release of Messenger Plus! Live (which can be downloaded from http://www.msgpluslive.com), this version of LiveConnect has been stripped of its BossKey functionality. Dynamic transparency, however, has been enhanced greatly (this being a feature that Messenger Plus! Live doesn't provide).

Devoid of many of the features seen in the previous versions and by some deft programming, it has been possible to bring down the size of the software from 1.1MB to 140KB. This version doesn't account for any of the previous versions (incompatible). It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you remove ALL previous versions before you run this. LiveConnect no longer needs an installer/uninstaller. It is now a lone executable that can be run from anywhere on your hard disk! If you decide you no longer want to use LiveConnect, all you have to do is delete the file.

Program updates:
1. Press 'F9' to open user interface.
2. Least processor usage ever (0% when idle).
3. Support for Fast User switching. Multiple users can be logged on at the same time running LiveConnect.
4. No system file modification.
5. Faster startup due to quicker update checks.

Internet Explorer 7

Internet Explorer 7 is out (it came out about a week back)! I've used all versions of the betas and RCs and I find Internet Explorer 7 way way better than Firefox (at least until Firefox 2.0 comes out)! It's got a amazing interface and I simply love tabbed browsing. It saves me a lot of space on my taskbar. Here's a list of what's new in Internet Explorer 7:

 - Improved user interface
 - Tabbed browsing
 - Favorites Center
 - RSS support
 - Zoom improvements
 - ClearType
 - Integrated anti-phishing filter
 - Browser history deletion

If you use Windows, you MUST install Internet Explorer 7. Don't get left behind!

Psst! Windows Media Player 11 will also be out before the month's up!!!

KJohn DesktopSearch

I've been away from my blog a long long time... In the meanwhile, I've completed work on my DesktopSearch program which is better and faster than Google Desktop in many ways.

KJohn DesktopSearch is a program that allows you to search for files on your computer within a fraction of a second. This is made possible by the use of an index (similar to Google DesktopSearch). Currently, the contents of files are not searched through. This program is intended to be used by people who have way too many files (like music, documents, etc.) to locate just the one(s) they want instantly.

This version of KJohn DesktopSearch supports the new Office 2007 file formats in addition to the Office 2003 (and previous) file formats. Adobe Photoshop Images are also supported apart from the widely used image files formats like bmp, jpg, png, gif, etc. Unknown/Unrecoginised file-types are only displayed during deep system scans. Total file types supported: 36

PLEASE leave your comments here once you've used the program. The download is in the form of a ZIP file containing the install program and a readme file (txt). Kindly go through the read me file before installing the program.

Busy Bee

I've been real busy the past few days.. no weeks... lots of things have happened and i'm still pretty busy with my exams coming up soon. The reason I was not able to blog for so long was that my internet connection's validity ran out and I had to get a recharge voucher and didn't really get the time to do so till very recently....

I am working on a desktop search program similar to Google Desktop but !believe it or not! it's much faster! I can't believe I was able to achieve that but I won't be able to release it without extensive testing. Here are a list of file types I am thinking of supporting. If you really really want more filetypes, please leave them as comments and tell me the nature of the filetype too...

FileTypes : DOC,RTF,PPT,XLS,WMA,WMV,MP3,MPEG,MPG,EXE,COM,
ZIP,RAR,CAB,TXT,HTML,PDF,AVI,MOV,MID,WAV,
BMP,JPEG,JPG,PNG,GIF

Windows Media Player 11 (leaked)

Windows Media Player 11 has been leaked on to the internet. Click on the link below to download it now. You will need WinRAR to extract the contents of the file. And then run "Run First.exe", followed by "Run Second.exe" to install the codecs and the player respectively.

Take my word for it, this is not a skin or a hoax, this is the real thing! Go get it!

The razor sharp margin

I was competing against another guy for a seat in the executive council of the student body in our college. I lost by 1 (!!!) vote. I got 20 votes and the other guy got 21.

I would not have minded had the person been competent enough to handle the post he was elected into. But it will be sweet in the long run, as he will soon realise that the once the initial euphoria settles he will not be able to handle the responsibility. This (nameless) person was nominated and supported by a group of students who did not have the qualifications to even be on the student body. Why did they do this? Well lets put it like this, the person they've got elected will listen to whatever they say without asking any questions, ... i'll leave the rest to your imagination.....

The Search effect

A lot of things have come up which take up my time now and prevent me from updating my blog regularly. Here is a small list:
1. Record work
2. IE 7 cripples my web browsing (so I'm on firefox now), no option but to reinstall Windows , where is the time for this procedure is the Q.
3. LOTS of assignments
4. Model exams around the corner
5. Family's abroad leaving me home alone to fend for myself for about a week more or so

On the bright side, I've made a desktop search engine which I am testing when ever I get a chance to "lose" files on my drive. It takes about 2.3 seconds to find relevant results from 34000 files a displays the results in the form of a Webpage like Google Desktop Search. But no searching within files and no screenshots of pictures. But for a one guy show it's a good start.

Me: $40 liquid
Google: $4 billion liquid
Me: Search PC fully in 2.3 seconds (0 to <how many ever files you have> per page)
Google: Search PC partially in 0.5 seconds (0 to ~50 results per page)
Me: turned 19 and am unemployed; well i'm in college.
Google: around 8 years old and employs the best minds in the world and money is no object if you've got the brains.

circa 2040 (this is just a JOKE, don't take it seriously)
Me: KJ Search $8 billion in annual turnover.
Google: What? Who? Isn't it spelt googol? :D

Anyway those suggestions for LiveConnect will be looked into and I will make it more desirable at the earliest but since you always have the option of uninstalling it, I won't be unnecessarily rushed.

Leave you nasty comments here!
P.S. I'm surprised I get 10000 visits a month considering MSN Spaces look sick on Firefox....
